Well the What’s Your Theme? art show is in full swing at Gallery 194 in downtown Lapeer and what a treat for all you cabin-fever, stuck in the grey of winter Michigan residents it is! The colour and diversity of artwork is like a breath of spring.

Kathy: Hi Judith, Perhaps you could tell me what you have been busy working on lately.

Judith: Judith Sweet Designs is coming out with it’s newest collection for Spring 2012. The collection, Spiraling out of Control,is made up of bright colored spirals and springs made of aluminum and some copper wire. Several of the pieces also include acrylic beads of various sizes, shapes and colors.

Kathy: When I met you at the gallery the other day you were excited about the new materials available for use in your designs.

Judith: The fun part of this collection is that bold, chunky looking designs can be created that are very lightweight. I heard women say they liked the bold, large designs but didn’t like the weight of them. The aluminum wire and large, acrylic beads give the bold look without the weight.

Kathy: So color plays a big part in the design?

Judith: The aluminum and copper wire come in such gorgeous, bright colors that the sky’s the limit on design possibilities.

Kathy: What was the initial inspiration behind the collection?

Judith: The collection came about after a necklace, bracelet and earring set was made of multi-colored aluminum spirals and springs to be donated to Lapeer 4-H for their annual auction. The set was so much fun to make, it was the motivator to make many more pieces and a “collection” was born.
Kathy: Can readers view the original jewelry?

Judith: The original “Spiraling out of Control” set will be included in the Art on the Town event that will run from February 27 through early April in downtown Lapeer. It can be seen at American Speedy Printing.

Kathy: Where can we see the rest of the collection Judith?

Judith: The rest of the collection will be on display and sale in the Lapeer Art Association gallery during the What’s Your Theme? show. Necklaces of various lengths, earrings, bracelets and rings are included in the collection.

Kathy: Well thank you for talking to me Judith and I am sure our readers will be visiting the gallery to bring color and design into their spring after seeing some of your collection here.

The drawing heralds the close of the Animal Kingdom exhibition and some of the animals gone to new homes! But that means a brand new exhibition is to open on February 18 with more art from the LAA members for you to enjoy.

The presentation will be held at the Brandon Township Library on Tuesday February 7 at 6.30 pm. The library is at 304 South Street, Ortonville, Michigan 48462.

LAA artist Mike Monville is offering a five week studio watercolor class  this month,  February for one or two students. This class is for beginning and intermediate students and will cover all aspects of watercolor including composition, technique, color mixing, brushwork, etc. Although it is not necessary, it is highly recommended that students have a basic knowledge of drawing.

This class will meet at Mike Monville’s Three Waters Studio a few minutes north of Lapeer. The cost is $105 and covers all materials. The exact day and time will be determined by the needs of the students.

A small class size, individualized instruction and a studio setting provide the perfect environment for studying the expressive medium of watercolor painting. If you are interested, please contact Mike Monville at 644-8663 for details.

Jacqueline says her love for art began as a release from her everyday job as an engineer. Being able to create what was in her head instead of from predetermined sketches allowed her the artistic outlet she craved. Starting with stained glass Jacqueline found mosaics so much more enjoyable and the forms and shapes and colors virtually endless.
